Hi, I'm Matt. I hand-cast every piece of Still & Strong decor right here in Minneapolis. I started working with cement to find a sense of grounding and stillness in a busy world, and I'm incredibly grateful to share a piece of that craft with you.
The Philosophy
In a world that demands we always be "on," I found my peace in the slow, deliberate process of casting stone. Still & Strong is more than just a name; it is the physical result of finding my own footing. It represents:
The Balance: Staying centered while staying driven. The Grit: The courage to be quiet and the discipline to be durable.
The Process
The first time I pulled a cured piece from its mold, I felt a shift. There is something deeply grounding about working with cement—it is heavy, raw, and completely honest.
Elevated Industrial: I take a material traditionally used for skyscrapers and refine it into smooth, tactile home accents. I balance the rugged texture of stone with a crisp, modern sophistication. Hand-Cast Precision: Every single piece is individually hand-cast, pigment-blended, and finished in small batches in our Minneapolis studio. I use premium acrylic sealers for a satin finish that protects surfaces.
The Mission
I believe the objects we live with should help us reclaim our time. Still & Strong creates architectural anchors for the intentional, modern home.
Functional Anchors: Whether a tray sits on your nightstand or coasters gather friends around a table, my hope is that these pieces bring a bit of the calm I feel while making them into your world. Patron Saints of Defiance
Folx who challenged powerful systems, protected their communities, or became symbols of resistance.
For almost a year, this project existed only as a single idea.
One day I came across an image of Luigi Mangione portrayed as a saint. It stopped me in my tracks because it forced two ideas that don't normally coexist into the same frame: reverence and controversy.
I couldn't stop thinking about it.
Why do we elevate some people to heroic status while condemning others? When does resistance become justice? When does survival become vengeance? Who gets remembered as a saint, and who gets remembered as a villain?
That single image became the seed for this collection.
At first, it was only Luigi. Then came Lorena Bobbitt. Then Aileen Wuornos. As I kept researching, I realized I wasn't collecting infamous people. I was collecting stories of people who reached a point where they refused to remain passive.
From there, the project expanded to include survivors, revolutionaries, activists, soldiers, queer trailblazers, and people whose lives force us to confront uncomfortable questions. Some defended themselves. Some fought oppressive systems. Some took actions that remain deeply controversial. Some are celebrated, some are condemned, and many are both, depending on who is telling the story.
I'm not interested in creating saints in the traditional sense. I'm interested in modern folk saints. People whose stories reveal the complicated relationship between power, survival, consequence, justice, and humanity. The candles invite reflection rather than agreement. They ask us to consider not only what someone did, but what circumstances, systems, or failures may have led them there.
If there's a prayer woven into this collection, it's this:
May we build communities where people are protected before desperation becomes their only perceived option. May we honor those who challenged injustice, learn from those whose stories warn us about the cost of violence, and remember that history is rarely as simple as heroes and villains.
Sometimes the most illuminating stories are the ones that refuse to fit neatly into either category.
